On Monday 13/8/07, the Cooma-Monaro Council discussed the 50/50 by 2020 targets that had been voted on by a large majority at the public meeting on 8/8. The Council are clearly concerned about the cost to rate payers, and want further information before considering the targets. A community working group is in the process of being established to come up with an action plan for 50/50 by 2020. Council will support that working group by providing 2 members of staff, who will work together with the community group. Mayor Tony Kaltoum has said that once the working group has sorted out the cost of 50/50 by 2020, council will be in a position to vote on the target. This cost will have to be balanced with the economic benefits of tackling climate change, and the cost of unmitigated global warming. A difficult job. We at Clean Energy For Eternity feel that we should be setting the sort of targets necessary to save the planet, and do whatever it takes to meet those targets. The benefits of doing so are an added bonus. Councils offer to help with the working group is a show of support. The 50/50 by 2020 target has already been adopted by the Bega Valley, Eurobodalla, and Snowy River Shire Councils. In October CEFE have been invited by the Mayor of Mosman to set a 50/50 by 2020 target for the Sydney suburb.
