PRESS RELEASE ACT Schools Human Sign A Big Message day is planned for Canberra and the South Coast on June 29th. Schools in ACT and southern NSW are forming giant human signs on their ovals to broadcast their climate change messages of hope and an urge to action by the broader community. Schools on the Far South Coast will also be forming signs on Wednesday 27th June. Schools will design their messages according to their concerns and hopes for the future health of the planet. Small schools are co-ordinating with each other to form longer words and phrases of their choice. At this stage messages such as “HOPE”, “SCHOOLS FOR CLIMATE CHANGE ACTION NOW!”, a message in Japanese or Indonesian and an image of a wind turbine are planned. The event is being co-ordinated by eSHACT (Environment Sustainability and Health ACT) and Clean Energy for Eternity (CEFE), a climate change action community group based in Bega NSW. Aerial photographs of the signs will be collated to form a massive display of messages from concerned young people. These will be displayed on websites and a travelling show that will visit communities throughout NSW and ACT. CEFE and eSHACT hope that students will utilise this opportunity to raise their concerns about climate change, implore adults to consider young people’s healthy future, act decisively on their behalf and make positive changes in behaviour to reduce energy consumption. The event will be carbon neutral with all plane emissions offset by schools planting trees and/or having carbon offset providers do so on their behalf. Project Co-ordinators, Jo Dodds and Liane Shields (02) 6499 0658

On Saturday 20 January the renewable energy project for the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club was opened. Mayor Tony Allen officially launched the project, which includes a wind turbine and solar photo-voltaic cells on the roof of Tathra Surf Club. The next stage is to add a solar hot water service, which will see the Surf Club running with a negligible carbon footprint.
The benefit of renewable energy for the surf club is threefold.
Firstly, the installation will save the surf club about $1000 per year. More will be saved following the installation of solar hot water.
Secondly, education and awareness are important. We are showing people (lots of people in summer) that renewable energy can work. Remember that renewable energy is BY FAR the quickest way of reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and our greenhouse gas emissions.
Thirdly, we will be saving our atmosphere nearly 3 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. That is a modest start, but when our kids are 20 years older, every tonne of CO2 will be important.
The plan is to get every surf club in the country running on renewable energy before the end of 2007, and we have already had a lot of interest from surf clubs around the country. Clean Energy For Eternity will be meeting with Surf Lifesaving Australia shortly.
I would like to thank the Bega Valley Shire Council for their support in funding this project. The same assistance has been offered to the Pambula Surf Club and Bermagui Surf Clubs. I would also like to thank Steve Garrett and his team from Pyramid Power in Pambula for installing the system and working to a tight time frame. The Lions Club and Rotary have made large contributions, and the Australian Greenhouse Office has provided us with a $4000 rebate. Communities and individuals on the South Coast have supported this project with their donations and their enthusiasm.

Matthew Nott Clean Energy for Eternity
The October release of the UK Stern Report stirred up heated debate across the world. In Climate comes in from the cold, Wendy Frew wrote "After playing down the effects of climate change for years, the Federal Government has suddenly changed its tune".
According to a San Diego newspaper, even China now sees climate change as an urgent priority. Norway, one of the few countries in the world likely to benefit from global warming, sees its moral responsibility to take strong action.
September saw Australians around the country flocking to see Al Gore's film, An Inconvenient Truth. Now 85 Australians are being trained to give his powerful slide show on climate change.
A landmark ruling in the Land and Environment Court means the NSW Government will have to take account of greenhouse gas emissions from Anvil Hill coal - more broadly, it will have to consider the climate-change impacts of all new industries.

Clean Energy for Eternity plans to kickstart the new year with a highly visible project to set up surf clubs on the south coast with renewable energy. First off the rank will be Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. The package will include solar hot water, photovoltaic cells and a wind turbine with a tail painted in surfclub colours. Bega Valley Shire Council will match our funds dollar for dollar, but we need community donations to get the project off the ground and onto surfclub roofs!
On Nov 28th Dr Matthew Nott received the individual energy champion Green Globe Award from NSW Minister for Energy, Joe Tripodi, for his work in mobilizing awareness of global warming.
The Surf Club project has been launched. Tony, President of the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club spoke to Tim Holt about the project and called for community donations. It is exciting to see Tathra leading the way, encouraging all 304 surf clubs acorss the country to move to renewable energy.
